    Commentary:

This is the fifth and perhaps final time I am doing the April poetry challenge.  The goal is to write at least one poem per day.  I am averaging about eight per day and posting four reserving four as “unpublished”. I am basing the poems on prompts from “Writing com Dew Drop Inn”, “Writers Digest”, “Poetry Superhighway” and “NaPoWrMo” prompt daily prompts and on “Pensively Prompt’ et all daily prompts.  I am combining prompts where possible.   I will post these here in batches every five days or so. Each poem will have an image that helped inspired the poem.  All postings will be podcasted a few days later on Spotify and elsewhere.  Each posting will be a separate posting, but the index will be cumulative. The final posting will have the complete list of all poems written whether posted or not.   Comments welcome but please keep it civil. Some of my poetry tends to be a bit “in your face” or “political” from a “leftwing perspective.”  If it offends you in some way, please accept my apologies in advance.  That is never my intent.

This is part three covering poems written April 20th to April 25th, posted on the 26th

I am writing some other poems per day but not posting them as I need to reserve some “unpublished” poems. There will be a podcast version shortly on Spotify, Public Radio, and elsewhere.  I will list all the poems I wrote in my final April posting, May 1 KST. Posted

The Backflip Poetry Prompt: Imagination’s Reversal Strategy

Anyone who has ever taken a creative writing course with me knows how much I dislike “prompts.” I have read very few poems written by an assignment that has the necessary duende to stand on their own feet.

However, the allusion in Cornelius Eady’s poem “Sherbet,” in The Best of Crazy Horse, to Langston Hughes’s poem about Harlem led me to consider the following prompt: end a poem with the same word that a famous poem concludes with, except you Frame it in the negative. Eaddy ends his poem with “explode,” except that it is framed as “can’t …. Explode.”

A similar approach is to consider any statement, especially at the end of a poem, for the possibility of extending into a chiasm. One obvious example is the ending of James Tate’s “The Lost Pilot.” This is not a matter of “inspiration,” I tell my students, who are almost always unfamiliar with this rhetorical construction. One must simply grow into the discipline of asking oneself if such a reversal is possible, and does it nurture the negative capability of the poem’s endeavor.

The Best of Crazy Horse: Thirty Years of Poetry and Fiction, edited by David Gauss (Fayetteville, Arkansas: The University of Arkansas Press, 1990). Eady’s poem can be found on pages 131 through 133.

    An Angel in My View

    When I first saw her
    I saw an angel
    In my view
    In my dreams
    I knew
    From that moment forward
    Someday
    I would meet her
    On that date
    I would meet
    My fate
    Eight years later
    She walked off a bus
    Into my life
    Became my wife

From the same source, I have not taken
    My sorrow—I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone—
    And all I lov’d Ilov’d alone—
    Then my childhood—in the dawn

From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still—

    There is Justice in America

    God Bless America

    Finally, there is Justice
    For the black man
    For the victim
    Of police abuse
    For the underdog

    Today the jury spoke
    The murder of George Floyd
    Was simply that
    Murder most foul

    Today in America
    We begin living up
    To our pledge

    That we are all
    Created equal
    And that no one
    Is above the law

    That black lives
    Do indeed matter

    And so, I say
    To Anne C
    And her odious ilk

    You lost
    Go home
    And shut up

    Chauvin was not a hero
    He was simply a zero

    The jury saw him
    For what he was
    A despicable human being
    Who killed a black man
    Because he thought
    That as a white policeman
    He could get away it

    He was wrong
    And so today
    Is a great day
    As Justice comes
    To America

what is love? Quesiton Poem NaPoWrMo

    Poets have tried for years
    To answer a simple question
    What is love?

    Scientists believe
    That Love is a delusion
    Nothing but chemicals

    Designed to get us
    To do our
    Reproductive duties

    Social scientists
    Think they can determine
    Our compatibility

    That it is all predictable
    All can be nailed down
    Explained away

But the reality is simply this
Love is not just a matter
    Of body chemistry

    Love cannot be explained
    Love cannot be quantified
    Love can only be experienced

    Love happens when it happens
    When two people meet
    Their souls become entangled
    Love is mysterious

    Love is beyond
    Our understanding

    In the end
    Love simply does
    What love does.

Make Love to Me as We Used To Writers Digest

For today’s prompt, take the phrase “(blank) Me,” replace the blank with a word or phrase, make the new phrase the title of your poem, and then, write your poem. Possible titles include: “Tell Me,” “Forgive Me,” and/or “You’ve Got to Believe Me.” Of course, feel free to bend the rules and have a title like “Home Sweet Ho(me)” or “Pick a (me).”

    My Life Began NaPoWrMo

And now for our (optional) prompt. Have you ever heard or read the nursery rhyme, “There was a man of the double deed?” It’s quite creepy! A lot of its effectiveness can be traced back to how, after the first couplet, the lines all begin with the same two phrases (either “When the . . .” or “I was like,”). The way that these phrases resolve gets more and more bizarre throughout the poem, giving it a headlong, inevitable feeling.

Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that, like this one, uses lines that have a repetitive set-up. Here’s an example I came up with after seeing this video of . . . a bucket of owls.

    My Life Began

My life began with a Dream
My life began with a scheme
    My life began that date
My life began when I met my fate
My Life began when she came to me
My life began when she came to be
My life began when she walked into my life
My life began when she became my wife

Appointment with the Grim Reaper, Writers Digest

For today’s prompt, write an appointment poem. My first thoughts with appointments conjure up visions of doctors, dentists, and parent-teacher conferences. But there are also business meetings and romantic dates. For the most part, people are very appointment-centric, because it gives people a reason and opportunity to come together (kind of like my annual appointment to poem daily on this site).

    Appointment with the Grim Reaper

    Sam Adams
    One day received a summons
    From the Grim Reaper
    The note read
    “Your appointment
    For final status determination (FSD)
    Is confirmed for midnight Saturday

    A driver
    will come for you
    Be prepared
    Tell no one
    This appointment is high
    Q level classified.”

    Sam got up at 11:30
    And waited for the courier
    While his wife slept

There was a knock on the door
    He went out
    The courier was dressed
    In a black uniform
But did not look entirely human

    He had a blank face
    No hair
    And horns on his head

    He said
    I am your driver today

    After your hearing
    I will drive you
    Either to Hell,
    Or to heaven

    Or back here
If you are given a reprieve
    Of your FSD
    They drove off

    In his black SUV
    The plates read, 666 hell
    They soon entered
    A dark forbidding forest

    The road ended
    They got out
    And walked

    Found themselves
    In a large field

    They parked
    And walked
    To a large black tent

    A demon attendant
    Barked

    Name and DOB
    Sam Adams
    10-30-195

    You have an appointment
    With Mr. GR
    Proceed to door number 2
    For you FSD
    Good luck

    He entered the room
    Mr. GR dressed in black
    Wearing cool Ray-ban glasses

    Looked up from his computer

    Sam Adams
    He growled
You have been given a reprieve
    From Hell
    For five years

Your next FSD will be final
    Probably Hell but maybe Heaven
That decision is beyond my pay grade

    You may go back home
    My driver will drive you
    Go!

    The driver took him home
    He went to bed
    Woke up convinced
    It was all a dream

    Later that day
    A letter arrived

    Appointment with GR
    For final status determination
    Has been confirmed for
    Five years from today’s date

    We advise you to get
    Your affairs in order
    There is no appeal

    PSH Blue Blues

Use color to spark your imagination. For starters, I suggest you brainstorm /green/! Consider green with envy; green around the gills; green grass of home; eco-green; and finally, all the myriad shades of green in the landscape. Use the word /green/ in your poem or imply it through your word choices. If you don’t care for green, try another color that adds poetry to the rainbow!

Here’s an example that is both implicit and explicit based upon green: a traditional 5/7/5 Haiku: Shamrocks greening now/after winter dormancy/one white bloom for luck.

    Blue Blues

    Once in a while
    I wake up
    Feeling the blues
    Singing the blues
    Being the blues

    Then I lookout
    At the bright blue sky
    And the dawning sun

    And at my wife
    Wearing a blue shirt
    And blue jeans

    She smiles
    The blues fly
    Out the window
    Joining the sky

    I go for a walk
    As the fog of blues
fade away in the morning sun

Not Alone – Response to Alone by Edgar Allen Poe

Today, I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that responds, in some way, to another. This could be as simple as using a line or image from another poem as a jumping-off point, or it could be a more formal poetic response to the argument or ideas raised in another poem. You might use a favorite (or least favorite poem) as the source for your response. And if you’re having trouble finding a poem to respond to, here are a few that might help you generate ideas: “This World is Not Conclusion,” by Peter Gizzi, “In That Other Fantasy Where We Live Forever,” by Wanda Coleman, “La Chalupa, the Boat,” by Jean Valentine, or “Aubade: Some Peaches, After Storm,” by Carl Phillips.

Not Alone – Response to Alone by Edgar Allen Poe

    Sam Adams
Was a bit of a loner
    Lost in his inner world
    Filled with dreams
    Nightmares
    Poetic fragments
    Short story ideas

Always felt like he was living
    The Edgar Allen Poe poem,

    “Alone

From childhood’s hour, I have not been
As others were—I have not seen
As others saw—I could not bring
My passions from a common spring—
From the same source, I have not taken
    My sorrow—I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone—
And all I loved—I loved alone—
    Then—in my childhood—in the dawn
Of a most stormy life—was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still—
From the torrent, or the fountain—
From the red cliff of the mountain—
From the sun that ‘round me roll’s
In its autumn tint of gold—
From the lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by—
From the thunder, and the storm—
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view—”

    But then one day
    He met the girl
    Of his dreams

    She walked off a bus
    Into his life
    Became his wife
    And he was alone
    No more

    I have often thought
    Our story would make
    A great rom-com movie
    a great K Drama maybe

    Perhaps one day
    I will write it

I saw her there who are you I screamed?
She just smiled, filling my heart with love
I did not know what I should do or say
As she entered my life, became my wife
I will never forget for on that day
When she walked off that bus became real
I saw here there standing love in her eyes
I did not know what right then I should feel
I looked at her, my heart began to rise

My heart began just like a poet

Earth Will Abide, Will Humanity? Writers Digest

For today’s prompt, write a nature poem. Write about the natural world, sure. But don’t be afraid to delve into human nature or the nature of love or whichever other interpretation comes naturally to you. Poem on!

    Earth Will Abide, Will Humanity?

    Held a climate summit
And for the first time, in four years

The earth will no doubt abide
    Until the end of time
    I wonder if humans
    Will do the same?

In a prompt originally posted this past February, Poets & Writers directs us to an essay by Urvi Kumbhat on the use of mangoes in diasporic literature. As she discusses in her essay, mangoes have become a sort of shorthand or symbol that writers use to invoke an entire culture, country, or way of life. This has the beauty of simplicity – but also the problems of simplicity, in that you really can’t sum up culture in a single image or item, and you risk cliché if you try.

But at the same time, the “staying power” of the mango underscores the strength of metonymy in poetry. Following Poets & Writers’ prompt, today I’d like to challenge you to write a poem that invokes a specific object as a symbol of a particular time, era, or place.

    I often wonder
How the world would have been different
If the Chinese had discovered Europe
    Back in the day

In 1430, China was way ahead
    Of Europe

By the 1600s, when the Europeans
    Began knocking on their doors
    Europe was racing ahead

And China was still in their
    Epic century-long decline

    If they had discovered Europe
Would I be writing this in Chinese?

    Would China have colonized America
    Would my homeland
San Francisco be a colonial outpost
    Of the greater Chinese Empire?

    Watching Movies with Subtitles

    For the last 40 years
    I have been watching movies
    With subtitles

    My wife
    Is not a native speaker
    And she early on decided

    That when she watched
    English language movies
She needed Subtitles in English or Korean

    I went along
    And found that subtitles
    Do help

    Sometimes
    In the midst
    Of action
It can be hard to hear
    The dialogue
    Subtitles help

    When I watch Korean programs
    I still need
    English subtitles

    I find I get 60 percent
    Of the dialogue
    Without the subtitles

    Many years ago
    When I was
    Teaching ESL

    One of my students
    Had a part-time job
    Writing subtitles in English

    I smiled
    His English was clearly
    Not up to the task

But I must say English subtitles
    Have gotten better
    In the last few years

Nowadays when I watch Korean TV
    They usually have Korean subtitles
    That helps me a lot

    As I can read Korean
    A lot better than
    I can speak it

    The subtitles
    Allows me
    To usually follow along

    The End

    An Old man
    Goes to the grave
    Of his beloved wife

    Carrying her favorite flowers
    And a guitar
    Playing her love songs
    As he remembers her life

    Blaming it all
    On the damn coronavirus Pandemic
    Killing thousands every day
    As politicians play games

    The dead remain dead
    He hears his wife’s voice
    From beyond the grave

    She is a corona ghost
He wishes he were there with her
As he plays his mournful love songs

He lays down for a moment
    And becomes another Corona ghost
Just another death that lonely day

April 30 In Search of America 1975 – Hitch hiking Tales

April 30 In Search of America 1975 – Hitch hiking Tales

    hitchhikers
    hitchhikers

When I was young and foolish
    Broke and stubborn
    I hitchhiked across the USA

    Started in Salt Lake City
    Where my greyhound bus pass
    Was stolen

    The station manager
    Could have helped me
    But refused to do so

    Threaten to call the cops
When I grabbed my bags Without the stolen tags

    I said
    Go ahead
But I am so out of here

    Wondered about Salt Lake City
    Went to a bar
Found I had to buy my booze
    Next door
And they would mix it for me

    Had to order food too
    After a bloody Mary
    And a burger

    I walked about town
    Saw the Mormon Temple

    Finally about 3 pm
It was time to hit the road
    Did not look back

    Ended up in Cody Wyoming
    Got a room shower
    Steak beer
Using my rapidly depleted cash Spent 25 dollars
    Money really went far
    Back in those days

    A band of professional
    Communist agitators
    Gave me a ride
    To Des Moines

    Lots of weed, booze
    And politics later
    Got off the road
    Slept outside

    Next day
    A beautiful woman
    Drove me to near Chicago
    In a red mustang

    Might have been
    The girl in the song
    Took it easy
    Digging her vibe

    She invited home
    But was not sure
    If her estranged husband
    Would welcome me

    So, I am being foolish
    And inexperienced with women
Did not go to her place

    And always regretted
    That I had lost
    My chance that day

    Then on to Chicago
    Several rides later
    Visited friends

    Hit the road again
    A series of uneventful rides
    With truckers
    And others

    And a week later
I ended in New York City

    Slept along the way
    In cars
    In truck stops
    In high way rest stops

    Always moving
    Always going
    Non stop talking
    And lots of free weed
    And beer
    And conversation

    One more memorable ride
    Occurred outside Albany
    On my return to Chicago

A middle age creepy looking man
    Picked me up
    In a brand-new Cadillac

He was he said a dynamite deliverer
    For the Mafia
    Went to various places
    To blow up shit

He hated a lot of people
    Particularly hippies from California
    And Jewish people

    Looking at me to confirm
    That I was both

I told him that I lived in New York
And had never been to California
And although I might have looked Jewish
As I what was called back in the day
    A “Jewfro”

    I was not Jewish
    Many years later I discovered
That I am indeed part Jewish
But then I did not know
And I felt a bit of strategic information
    Might keep me alive

Then I realized that he was just jiving with me
    And we relaxed
And he pulled out some weed
    And beer
    And we mellowed out

But I believe that he really was with the mob
    Perhaps not a dynamite dealer
A real made Italian made mafia member

    By Chicago
    I had enough
    I called my Dad
    Told him what had happened

    Wanted a ticket home
And he sent me a ticket
    And 500 dollars
    And I went home

I told him I would tell him
    My tales some day
    But never did

    I learned so much
    About my fellow Americans
    And the strange vibe
    That was 1975

And now it is too late
    But I wanted to finally
    Tell the world

    Of my hitchhiking tales
    In search of America 1975

    Charles Bukowski Road Not Chosen

    While reading Charles Bukowski poetry
    On the metro ride home
    Listening to Buddha bar music
On my oh too hip IPod

I begin to see myself as I was
Over 30 years ago when I was merely a bit player
A minor character in a Charles Bukowski poem

    A wild young underemployed intellectual
Hanging out in dismal bars and dives all over Asia and California
Hanging with disreputable women and drunks and drinkers
And characters out of his kinds of haunts

A mad poet bard of the underground
A drunken poet in a drunken bum show
That nightly played in his head

Then one day I met the women of my dreams
And went down a different path
A long slow path to respectability

    And now 30 years later
I am no longer a wild man
I am still a poet at heart
But I am now also a bureaucrat
    In a button down suite

    Doing the people’s business
    Working for the Government
    I’ve become the Man

    Sometimes I wonder
Would I have been better off
    Going down that another path

    Would I have ended up
    Somewhere else
    Doing something else

Would I have been as happy
Would I have been as successful?

There is no answer that satisfies
    The longing in my heart
    For that wild thing
    That still lurks beneath
    It’s civilized cover

And I know that I am still
    A mad poet at heart
Railing against the injustice of the world

As I work day by day in the belly of the great beast of State
I recall the ancient Chinese saying,
“Confucian during the day while Taoist rebel at night”
Playing out in my head and nightly dreams
In the true American Upper class patrician tradition

I close the book and look out the window
Get off the train, and walk slowly home

And realize I had no choice
But to take the path that I’ve trodden on

And so I put aside my misgivings
And say goodbye to my “Bukowskian”desires
For another night of domestic contentment

Was it worth it all to take the conventional path
And not take the bohemian road to hell and back

I look at my wife and realize
I had no choice, had no choice
But to follow her to the ends of the earth

And beyond by her side as we walked our path
    Of shared destiny

Goodbye Charles Bukowski wherever you are
May I meet you in a bar in the next life
And figure out where we should have gone

Until then the drinks are on me.

    Fallen Dreams Litter the Ground

    Fallen Dreams Litter the Ground

    In the fall weather
As I walk amid the falling leaves
    I see the signs everywhere

    Of the fall of America
The once great and mighty Empire
Everywhere signs of the fall appear

    The dark skies mirror
The darkness that settled over our land

Death, destruction and random acts of chaos
    Are all around us
Surrounding us with visions of doom

    Nothing can stop the bloodletting
No one seems to be in charge

    As the leaves fall
    And the darkness descends
    The fall of America continues

    If you’ve been around

    If you’ve been around

    If you’ve been around
    As much as I have
    Decades of memories
Fill up your brain’s hard drive

    Remembering the dead
    Misremembering the living
    Seeing the past fly past
    Everywhere you go

    Thinking about things
You did and did not do
As your life begins to fade
    Sinking into lost worlds past

    Seeing the ghosts
    Of all you knew
    Whispering Soon you will
    Be joining us

Lone Foreigner Hiking the Seoul City Walls

    Hiker

    A Lone foreign male hiker
In the hills above the city
Hiking along the ancient Seoul City walls

    500 years after the founding
    Of the city in 1492

    Balancing his walk
    Amid the boulders
    The winter is coming
    Soon he thinks

    And finishes his hike
    Heading to a bar
    To sake his thirst

    Some soju, and bulgogi
    Will do the trick
    He thinks to himself

    Just another day
    In the life

    Of an unknown nameless
    Foreigner in the city
    Of Seoul

    Part  of the ten million
    Naked stories
    In the big city

    My Name Is Nobody

    My Name Is Nobody

    My name, it is Nobody
No one cares who I am
I am just a nameless clone
    In the cold, unfeeling bureaucracy

    Just one of the army
    Of civilians

who flood into and out of the city
    Every day

    A non-entity,
    A ghost
    A govbot
    A cyber
    A spook
    A faceless automan
    A bureaucrat

    Just a grey-suited
    Cog in the machinery
    And no one cares
No one knows who I really am

    And I am legend
    Everywhere and nowhere

Just the way this modern world
    All shred of humanity
    Crushed beneath

    The cruel wheel of society
    In the cold, harsh world
    There is no room anymore
    For true human feelings

We are just robots, clones, machines
And so I go to work
    Put on my mask

And no one hears my inner screams
And no one will ever care

I want to scream and shoot the TV and run out side Shouting

    “Stop the world.

I want to get off this fucking crazy planet”
The earth does not care a whit about my attitude
It merely shrugs and moves around the Sun
    In its appointed daily run
    And I sit down
    The madness dissipating a bit

    And enjoy my second cup
    Of heaven and hell
In my morning cup of Joe

    Strangeness in the Air

    Strangeness in the Air

There is a strangeness in the air
    A sense of cosmic unease
Hangs silently in the purple crystalline sky

    America woke up
    And decided it was time
    To quit following like lemmings
    Over the Clift

    As the pied piper chants
Stay the course, stay the course
We were like lemmings following him
Dying to save his wounded pride

Today there is that strange difference
    In the air
    As Americans woke up
And threw off their chains of fear

Unhinged Lunatic Howling at the Full Moon

Unhinged Lunatic Howling at the Full Moon

On the night of the blood-red super full moon
I sat in an evil, depraved godforsaken bar

Drinking drams of demented, fermented dream dew
Washed down by endless rounds of whiskey
rum, tequila, vodka, soju and of course beer
drinking with my buddies the Jack Daniels Gang

Drinking my way to Hell and beyond
Just as fast as I could
    twenty damn drinks too sober

    Just an unhinged lunatic
Dreaming of howling at the full moon

    Watching the world walk by
Looking at all the fine-looking babes
    Walking by the street

    Thinking wild, erotic thoughts
    Of endless wild libertine passions

    When into the bar
    That din of cosmic depravity

    Walked the most beautiful women
    In the Universe

    So wild, so free
    So wonderfully alive

I did not know what to do
    As this vision of delight
    Sauntered through the bar

    In a skin-tight leather pant
    Looked so fine
    That my eyeballs hurt

And finally, I had to say something
So, I gathered up my manly courage
    And walked up to her

    And she looked at me
    And instantly bewitched my soul

    With a devilish grin
    I lost all reason
    And became a raving lunatic
    Unhinged lunatic
Howling at the blood red full moon

    Foaming at the mouth
    A wild, free werewolf
    Howling at the lunatic light
Of the blood red blue full Moon

    Part One Love Poems

I will Love you until the end of time

I will Love you until the end of time

That is all I need to say

That is all that there is

Nothing but love in my heart
Waiting for me to say it
And for you to believe it

In the beginning of the world

In the beginning of the world

    I saw you there
    Walking off that bus

    And that was the beginning
    Of my life with you
And the end of the rest of the world

Love Cherita -I Married the Girl of My Dreams

I married the girl of my dreams

    First dreamt of her
    Back in 1974

    Eight years later
    she walked off a bus
    and into my life

It All Began in Berkeley, California

It All Began in Berkeley, California

in the spring time of 1974
    one fateful afternoon

    I was nodding off
in my high school physics class
And saw her in my dream

    I Looked Up

    I looked up

and saw a tall, beautiful Asian woman
    standing looking at me

She was the most beautiful women
    in the universe to me
I screamed out, who are you?

    She Disappeared

    She Disappeared

    like she was beamed
    away from my dream

I knew that moment that someday
    I would meet the girl
    In the dream

    Little Did I Know

    Little Did I Know

    I would have to wait
    eight long years

    Until 1982
    to meet her in reality
when she walked off that bus

    Starting that month

    Starting that month

I began having the same dream
    Month and month and month

    Always the Same Dream
    She was saying something
    in a strange language

    Then one day

    then one day

    I had the dream
and knew that she was in Korea

I Knew She Was Waiting for Me
    I chose to go Korea
    In the Peace Corps

    Somehow knowing

    somehow knowing

That I would meet her there
and I looked for her there

    for three years
    I looked everywhere
    and never found her

One Day I Had the Last Dream

One day I had the last dream

    It happened in the morning
A year after the Peace Corps ended

    A month before I planned
    to leave to return
to the U.S. for graduate school

That Morning Early in the Morning

That morning early in the morning
I had the last of these dreams

    This time I understood her
    She said,

    “걱정 마. 우리는 곧 만날 것이다. ”
    “geogjeongma. ulineun god mannal geos-ida.
    “Don’t worry.   We’ll meet soon.”

I Was Born Again That evening

I Was Born Again that evening

As I was getting off the bus
    To go to my class

I saw getting off the bus
    The girl in my dream
    It was she!

    I was Speechless

    I was speechless

I did not know what to do
    Wanted to tell her

How could I tell her that
    Hey, you are the girl
    I have been dreaming about

Over the Course of the Evening

Over the course of the evening

I ran into her several times
Finally, I was introduced to her

    I muttered some lame excuse

About wanting to find a Korean tutor
    and got her number.

My New Life Began the Next Day

My new life began the next day

The next day she came to the gate
Of my base where I was teaching

She said that she had to speak with me
I told to wait in the library
    for about an hour

    I Would Cancel Class

    I would cancel class

    and meet her then
    We went out for coffee

She told me that she was madly
    in love with me
And simply had to have me

I Told Her I Felt the Same Way

I told her I felt the same way

    I proposed five days later
And got married one month later

    Does she believe this story?
She claims she does not believe it
Because it is impossible to be true

But I Know That There Are Other Worlds

But I Know That There Are Other Worlds

In a past life we must have been together
somehow our love was so strong

    That it crossed over
    the barrier of past lives
    finding me in this life

    She found me in 1974

    She Found Me In 1974

    But it took until 1982
    For us to actually meet

And it has been 35 years
Since we met in the physical sphere
Or 43 years since the dream began

And I still recall the dream

and I still recall the dream

    I had no choice
    when  I met her

    we were fated
    to be together
    until the end of time

    End Dream Cherita

    Magazine Bonsai Haiku

    Living with Pain Hanibun

Back in 1996 I had the accident that changed everything.I went jogging one morning. It was dark outside, and I thought that I knew the trail. I fell down a ledge hidden where the trail should have been. I shattered me heal in a million pieces. I was rushed to an ER and told that I needed n emergency operation and would be bed ridden for four months. My wife was in San Antonio at the time serving in the Army, I was in DC working for the State Department. I flew in a wheel chair to San Antonio where they proclaimed that they had to wait a week for the swelling to go down before they could operate. The Air force doctors wanted to try a new procedure – using shark cartridge as a bone supplement. The operation was a success until I quit taking antibiotics six months later. I was in DC by myself then. I went to the hospital for an unrelated thing -removal of a cist I think. But the doctors took one look at me and proclaimed that the staph had become a multiple drug resistant staph and I needed an urgent operation. The next day I had the third of 15 operations. I endured six months at Walter Reed hospital but that was in the 90’s prior to the wars of the 21st century filled the base up. They had few customers and I got to know the doctors well

    I know pain
    Intimately aware of every ache
    Every pain

    Ever since that day
When I went under the knife
    And had the 14 operations

    That saved my life
But I am not one to complain

I became one with the pain
Which I endure to this day

    Knowing that I am alive
    Having cheated death
    Twenty times in life

    Waiting for the grim reaper
    To finally claim me

But that day has not come
And until the, I will endure.

Hiking the Hills of My Youth

I grew up in Berkeley, California in the 60’s Ever since I was a youngster I would wander the hills of Berkeley hiking for hours by myself and sometimes with my friends

I explored every nook and cranny every corner of the hills and got to know nature in its infinite beauty

Ever since those days I have longed for the day that I could spend my days hiking and wondering the hills

Now that I am retired and living in Korea I can go for a long walk in the hills every day I want

It is not the same as the hills I grew up, no vistas of the Bay and it is in Korea to boot but most days it is sufficient as I head out early afternoon and conquer four or five miles of hills just enjoying that fact that I can still move and am still very much alive at age 62.

I grew up hiking the hills of Berkeley, California
Grew up knowing every corner of the hills
And the infinite beauty of the Bay Area

And now I find myself in a strange land
    With time on my hands
I wander the hills above the airport
    In Incheon Korea

    And wander about here
    and there Just being grateful

    That I am still alive
    And kicking at age 62

  • Solving the Homeless Crisis

    Solving the Homeless Crisis

Broken Down Souls, Solving the Homeless Crisis

    Solving the Homeless Problem

The homeless crisis in the United States has gotten
out of control. Something must be done I’m both the federal state and local levels to solve the problem of homelessness in the United States. The private sector, especially large employers, the tech sector, the universities, and the NGO sector must be involved as well. This must must be made a top priority of the Federal and state governments to end the scourge of homelessness once and for all recognizing that housing is a basic human right and no one in America will be allowed to live on the streets anymore. Here are my proposals. I would call upon the Department of Housing to take the lead by convening a national convention on the Housing Crisis with follow-up legislation and action by the Federal government, in cooperation with State, Local governments and the private sector.

There’re four elements  to my proposal

There must be a lot more housing built, mostly Multi family units, old-style boarding houses and single family residence hotels I’ve departed that picture as well including Group housing, and temporary housing for the chronic homeless should be set up knees tent cities would provide employment Basic medical care training and assistance to transition the residents into more permanent housing solutions.

Housing is a Basic human Right

One of the key elements of the proposal is the recognition that housing is a basic human right, no one and no one Will be allowed to live on the streets. If someone cannot afford housing today would be a sign to the homeless camps and this would be mandatory.

I know that this part of the proposal will be controversial from a civil liberty point of view, but I feel it is essential to solve the homeless  problem.   It is simply unacceptable then in the richest country in the world are being forced to live on the streets.

To pay for new housing and the the shelter system, a modest increase and income taxes is warranted.  Most of the cost of running the shelters an expansion of housing should be done to the federal government.

As part of the solution, housing vouchers should be provided to people who are earning less than I hundred 200 of the poverty line so that they could afford to rent housing.

    More housing Must Be Build

There must be a lot more housing built everyhere, and most of them must be built along transit lines, and most must be multi family unit facilities. The era of single-family homes Will have to come to and end.  As part of this it must be made easier to convert single-family homes in the multifamily units, so call granny flat must be made available everywhere, short term housing must be regulated and made part of the pictures well.

Changes to Zoning, Smart Growth Policies

Local zoning laws that restrict housing in the residential areas only need to be revised, the goal should be mixed use development everywhere.  Large buildings should consist of apartment offices and retail,  smaller scale developments must include offices and retail as well.  The goal should be a cityscape something similar to develop to the development any station where most housing is multi use buildings and everyone is within walking distance of offices retail and transit.  Metropolitan governments need to have a regional planning office to coordinate new housing we develop mental housing retail commercial development an improved access to transit. Developers Will be giving incentives to build most housing at market value or below market value housing.

In California in other states that have similar restrictions, prop 13 and other property tax restrictions must be revised to encourage courage people to sell properties or renovate properties. Similarly zoning laws must be changed to encourage housing development, and mixed use development, and smart growth policies. The era when developers build housing far from transportation systems without any coordination with local government or planning must end.

Boarding Houses , Dormitories, other Group Housing and SOH’s need to be revived

As part of the housing problem, boarding houses,  Group houses, dormitories for corporate workers, government workers including fire fighters, police and teachers, and university students on site need to be part of that package as well. inexpensive  single occupancy hotels must be part of the package with the recognition that Half the population will end up living in these group housing arrangements.  Very few people Will live in single-family homes anymore, most people will live in need of poop housing for apartment buildings, although there will be still people living in single-family homes and that is fine.

temporary housing camps including a revival of the Civilian Conservation Camp need to be part of the Proposal

Homeless tent camps should be legalized and located and areas near downtown.   The camps must be located along transit lines.  Anyone who needs a place to stay would be given a cot in a four man tent. The tenants will be heated and have air-conditioning, and Wi-Fi access.  All the residents of the camp will work 30 hours a week to help maintain the camps in an hygienic attractive a manner, administrative services and law enforcement services for the camp, or will work in the national, state and local parks and forrest doing conservation projects, or serving as first responders.  thus some people will live off site for a considerable amount of time near the forest, and park conservation sites, but all people will be assigned to a home camp.  That camps will have food services for the residents food services for the residents medical services an offer education and training services as well.

the Camps would be run like the old CCC camps award of the great depression. The Cams will provide temporary housing for people in exchange for assistance and public service employment activities including conservation activities. Drug use alcohol use and gambling of course will be illegal in the camps, as will panhandling.  Sleeping on the streets outside the camp will be illegal and the homeless will be rounded up and taken to the camps involuntarily if needed.

To pay for these camps, the federal government we’ll pay for most of the cost.

State and local governments working with the real estate developers, will develop low cost permanent housing, and camp residents will  be transited into permanent housing as a housing is brought online.

The Camps will be open to all who need them including undocumented Aliens. No one will be turned away board turned into an immigration.

The camps be training and educational service centers, and temporary employment centers, with most residents living elsewhere.

We can Solve the Problem if We Make it an Urgent National Priority

If all these  proposals are enacted in a comprehensive national strategy, the scourge of homelessness can be defeated and no one in America we’ll be forced to live on the streets.

Broken Down Souls Do You See Them?

    Broken Down Souls

    Broken Down Souls
    You see them everywhere

    On the street
    On the bus

    On the metro
    But mostly wandering the streets

    Lost souls
    Broken down defeated souls

The souls of the living dead
    Dead inside

    Waiting for death
    To deliver them

    from the agony
    Of the living dead

    They make do
    They beg

    They steel
    They con their way

    Living the street life
    Living death

    Broken Souls
    You have two minds

    One part of you
    the fearful part of you

    Conditioned to ignore
    Conditioned to walk by

    Ignoring the tragic wounded lives
The broken souls all around you

    But part of you knows
    That you can’t do that

    But you can’t save everyone
So, you do what you can

    You help those
    whom you can

    All it takes
is a little act of compassion

    A little human kindness
A few bucks or a cup of coffee

    And you walk by
    Knowing just knowing

That by a simple act of acknowledging
    Our shared humanity

You have made a small victory
    And brought happiness

    To yet another
    broken down soul

    And the fear
    that you will

be a broken soul some day
    Recedes away

    Not me never
    Never will happen to me

    But one forgets
    It is a simple matter

    A wrong turn in life
    The wrong place

    wrong time
    wrong thing

And you could be the broken soul
    On the street

    Begging to be heard
    Begging to be taken away

    And so,
I walk on by no more

    I will listen
    I will talk to them

I will make a small difference
    And in so doing

    Avoid becoming
    a broken-down soul

    Homeless Fears

    I almost became
    a broken-down soul

    Out on the street
    So many years ago

    I was in college
    Adrift for the summer

    Smoking too much weed
    Aimless

    And I hung out
    And got to know

    Some of the homeless
Some of the bums on the street

    And I vowed
That I would never be that person

    Never sink that low
    Never ever

    Be the homeless bum
    The invisible man

    And that knowledge
    Stuck with me

    Throughout my life
    Now many decades later

    I try to remember
    And I try to help

    When I can
    And recall what

    it would be like
    To be on the street

    With nothing
    but your clothes

    And the money you borrowed
    To keep you alive

    No One Knows Their Name

The worst part of it all
    As I survey the homeless

Across this great land of ours
The worst part of it all

Is that no one knows their name
    No one knows their story

    No one cares at all
And in this age of hatred

    Sponsored by our president himself
    The homeless are being treated

More and more as disposable trash
    More and cities

    Are banning the homeless
    From their cities

    Banning feeding the homeless
    Banning begging

    Banning sleeping in the streets
    And banning their camp sites

    If they could
    they would

    round them all up
    And shoot them

Or let them run for their life
In some sort of game on TV

    Because the homeless
    Are an affront

    to these so called
    Christian patriots

They are lazy good for nothing losers
Who cause problems for good citizens

    They should be locked up
    Or removed

For the good of us all
    No one wants them

    No one cares
And no one knows their name

    President Trump Discovers the Homeless

    President Trump
    Our dear compassion leader

    Recently discovered
    That homeless people

    Were everywhere
    All over DC

    NYC
    And especially LA and SF

    The homeless were becoming
    A huge problem

    And something must be done
    The homeless were taking

    Up the best real estate
    And making life difficult

For the masters of the Universe
    Something must be done

The homeless have to be rounded up
    And sent to camps

    Out of sight
    out of mind

    and people would wonder
where did the homeless people go

    if they noticed
    them missing at all

    Social Purification Drives

    Korean social purification movement

    In the 1980’s in Korea
    The government decided

To end the scourge of homelessness
    Once and for all

    The decree went out
The police rounded them all up

    Shut down the street vendors
    and homeless shanty towns

    Sent them off for re-education
    Deep in the countryside

Just in time for the Olympics
    The homeless disappeared

Broken Down Souls Do You See them?

Broken down Souls Do You see them
    Or are they invisible
    all the broken souls

    no where to go

The Story of How We Met

Note: This is a true story. For further details see Dreams and the Unexplainable– a Chicken Soup for the Soul book, published September 2017.

It all began in Berkeley, California
In the spring time of 1974
    One fateful afternoon

I was doing in my high school Physics class.

    I looked up
and saw a tall, beautiful Asian woman standing looking at me.
She was the most beautiful women
    in the universe to me

I screamed out, who are you?
She disappeared like she was beamed away from my dream.

I knew that someday I would meet the girl
    In the dream

    Little did I know
I would have to wait until 1982

    Starting that month
I began having the same dream Month and month and month.
    Always the same.

She was saying something to me in a strange language.

Then one day I had the dream and knew that she was in Korea.

So, I chose to go Korea
    In the Peace Corps,

    Somehow knowing
That I would meet her there.

    One day
A year after the Peace Corps ended
    A month before I planned
    to leave to return
to the U.S. for graduate school

That morning early in the morning
I had the last of these dreams.
    This time I understood her.

    She said, “Don’t worry.
    We’ll meet soon.”

    That evening
As I was getting off the bus
    To go to my class

I saw getting off the bus
    The girl in my dream.
    It was she!

    I was speechless.
I did not know what to do.

Over the course of the evening I ran into her several times.

Finally, I was introduced to her.
    I muttered some lame excuse
About wanting to find a Korean tutor and got her number.

The next day she came to the gate
Of my base where I was teaching
    ESL to Koreans
She said that she had to speak with me.

I told to wait in the library
    for about an hour,
    and I would cancel class

    and meet her then.
    We went out for coffee.

She told me that she was madly in love with me

And simply had to have me.
I told her I felt the same way.

    I proposed five days later,
And got married one month later. Does she believe this story?

She claims she does not believe it Because it is impossible to be true.

But I know that there are other worlds and other times.

In a past life we must have been together somehow. And our love was so strong

That it crossed over the barrier of past lives.
    She found me in 1974,

    But it took until 1982
    For us to actually meet.

And it has been 35 years
Since we met in the physical sphere
Or 43 years since the dream began

And I still recall the dream
    And meeting her

    I had no choice
    When I met her
We were fated to be together
Until the end of this lifetime
And the next and the next

    Chains That Bind Us

I realize that my love for you
Is like a chain of steel
    Unbreakable,
    Tough as nails

Yet as your love entangles me I realize that I embrace my imprisonment
Don’t want to venture out of my cell

Made of our years together bit by bit
    We have become entangled
Where I end, and you begin
    Hopelessly entangled

Even if I wanted to break free
    I could not
For I am you and you are me
My fate is in your hands

    So, I relax
    Decide to Just enjoy
    The ride of my life
    As we move
    Towards the final moments

Together as we have always been
    Inseparable, merged into one being
    Staring at each other

Wondering who is that Person Of eternal mystery That has so captured my soul
And imprisoned it in her love

I smile thinking of your love
The endless pleasure it has brought me
The endless pain I have endured
Just to be next to you

    Part of you
    Until the day I die
When we meet in the next world

Where Do I and You Begin

    I woke up one day
    Realized, I no longer knew
    Where you and I began

    Where you and I ended
    We had become almost one

    We talked in half sentences
    Knowing what the other wanted
    Knowing how it would end

    We ate the same foods
    With some resistance

    Because I still crave
    an old-fashioned American meal,
    and she does not

    But still, we were becoming
    more and more the same

    I feared losing myself
    In your embrace
    Becoming you
    You becoming me

    This fear of losing me
    In the ocean of us
    Overwhelms me at times

But I know I will always
    Return to your arms

    Because I cannot live
    A moment
    Without you at my side

I know you are the same
we feel each other’s inner pain We feel each other’s outer pain

    Our history has merged
    Into one

    Is that not the secret
    Of a long marriage?
    Have I figured
it all out in the end?

    Does it come to this?
    A merging of two souls
    and two bodies?

    I don’t have the answers
But I don’t have any more doubts
Or regrets with the path I have taken

    I still look forward
    To waking up each morning

    Seeing you there
and knowing that every day we have together

Is a gift that I will cherish
    Until my dying breath

    Lost and Found

    I was lost
    And you found me

You walked out of my dreams
    And into my life

And that made all the difference
    In the world

    As you entered my life

I was all alone in this cruel world
    And you provided shelter
    And comfort

I did not know what I wanted
And you gave me what I wanted

    You gave me meaning
    You gave me purpose

    You gave me love
    And understanding

    peace and happiness
    Joy, laughter and fun

    You were endlessly fascinating
Could not keep my eyes off you

You were the most beautiful women
    In the world to me

    And you still are
    So many years later

Like a fine bottle of wine
    Gets better with age

    And you gave me
Endless nights of wild love making

    Which has gotten better
    As well

And I fell under your spell
from the day I met you
    I was lost
    And you found me

    And if you go first
    I will be lost again

    Can’t live without you
    By my side

    Thus, is has always been
    Between us

    We are so entangled
    So, interwoven

    And that is the way
    It was meant to me

Ode To Love On Valentine’s Day

Every since I met you my dear
My life has not been the same

    Before I found you
I was lost, sad and lonely
Going nowhere as fast as possible

    I was stuck
Did not know what direction to pursue
At the intersection watching life go by

I was lost, lonely and full of despair
Then one day I saw you

    The girl of my dream
Standing there on the side of the road

    I was filled with terror
    Could not speak

What if you refused to see me
What if you denied my protestations of love

    What if you walked away
    Never to bee seen again

I knew I had to do something
I had to do it then and there

And then you came up to me
    Your voice

    The voice of an Angel
    Sweat, full of light

    Fun and entire sunshine

Ever since the day I met you
Whenever I feel down and depressed
    I look at your picture

    And sunshine fills my heart
And I am confident, happy and ready

To face all of life’s travails
As long as I have your love
    And your support

    I can overcome all obstacles
    And face all dangers

Together we can do most anything

Without you I will be lost
    In the swamp of despair

    So my dear
    Please stay with me
Forever to the end of time

    Let us journey forward
    Never looking back
    My love, my life

    The sun in the sky
The moon that lights my dreams at night
The stars that beacon far away

    Thank to the Gods above
For bringing you into my life

And I promise I will love you
    Forever and a day

    Just to see your face
    Is heaven itself

    Just to hear your voice
Is all that I ever need

    My love, my soul mate
    Hurry back to me

We have so much loving to do
    So much living to do
    So much to do together

    Walking confidently
    Boldly into the future

    Without you
    All is nothing
    But dust

    With you
    Everything is possible

    My love
    Until I see you again
    A thousand kisses

And a million thoughts of love
    That will have to suffice
    Until we are reunited

    My love, my darling,
    My life and dreams

    Hurry back to rescue me
    From the despair and darkness
    All around me

    Until then
    I salute you

    Oh Queen of my Heart
    General of Love
    Captain of my Soul

The Poetry Super Highway has published their 20th Annual Yom Hashoah Issue featuring 58 poets. This week, 71 poets from all over the world remember the Holocaust in our 20th annual Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) issue.   Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) was this past Thursday, April 12th.

I am one of the 77 poets chosen. I was inspired to write by the DNA confirmation that i am indeed part Jewish.

You can read the poets here

    Neo-Fascism Must Be Defeated Again

In this day and age of fake news

    And neo-fascism rising yet again
It is important to bear witness

    To the undeniable fact
That the Holocaust can never ever come again

That is what we must vow every day
    Never again

and some other of my fascism poems

2017 How Much I Despise You

Following 2016 the second-worst year ever
Will 2018 be any better ?

    And what we have suffered
The darkness settles on the land
Like a curse on the land

As our mad demented senile dotard king wannabe
    Struts about the world’s stage
    Ushering Americas inevitable decline

As America’s foes and friends wonder
    Has America gone mad
Turing over ultimate power to this man
A con man the narcissistic criminal

Self-proclaimed smartest man in the room
In reality a clueless reality TV hustler
    Whose sell-by date has expired

As he tries to make America great again
    For white Christian men

The rest of the country struggles
To cope with the ever declining standard of living

The 1 percent loved the stock market
Love the dismantling of the regulatory state
    The corporate tax cuts

and the coming plunder of the land
Can Disney Yellowstone be the future?

While the rest of the world
Embraces the energy of the future
And this great denier of the truth
Wants to boldly take America back

To the 19th century era of oil, and coal

Yet perhaps it does not matter in the end
As long as we have one another

    The darkness will come
But it will go away someday soon
The great American nightmare will be over

This is what I pray for 2018
    The end of the darkness
    that consumes our land

    American Life and Death

    As American struggles
To cope with the ever declining
    standard of living
    for the forgotten 99 percent

The 1 percent loved the stock market
    Love the dismantling
    Of the regulatory state
    The corporate tax cuts

And the coming plunder of the land
Can Disney Yellowstone be the future?
    As America declines
    Back to the future

    Heading Back to the Past

While the rest of the world
Embraces the energy of the future
Our great denier of the truth
Wants to boldly take America back

To the 19th century era of oil, and coal
Yet perhaps it does not matter in the end
As long as we have one another

    We will overcome
The darkness will flee the land

    When Will this Darkness End

As the darkness settles down on the land
    All are consumed with evil
    Foul deeds and endless darkness
I wonder if it will ever go away

    Yes I wonder
If our great nightmare will ever end
    Are we doomed
To live out the decline of America?

This is what I pray for 2018
    The end of the darkness
    The unleashed hatred
    that consumes our land
