The Secret Metro Pathway That AI Had to Fin
One of the promises of public transit is that it gets you close enough to walk. Yet too often, the final few blocks between a station and a destination feel like a scavenger hunt.
I recently experienced this at the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station while trying to reach Inova Healthcare on Walker Lane. The hospital is only about 0.6 miles away, roughly a 10-15 minute walk. In theory, this should be an ideal transit trip. In practice, it was surprisingly difficult.
A pedestrian pathway begins near the station’s Kiss & Ride area and provides a relatively direct route toward Walker Lane. Another path heads toward Manchester Lakes. The problem is that neither route is marked, indicating where the pathways lead, no destination markers, and there is little information on station maps. In fact, INNOVA hospital does not appear on the map at the station.
The result is uncertainty. Is this a public path? Does it connect all the way through? Am I heading toward the hospital or into a residential area? A journey that should be simple becomes stressful.
In our case, we turned to artificial intelligence for help. By combining satellite imagery, mapping tools, and route analysis, AI helped us decode what felt like a hidden transportation asset. What should have taken a simple sign took several minutes of digital detective work.
Directions to the Hospital
Starting at Franconia-Springfield Metro Station:
- Exit toward the Kiss & Ride area.
- Locate the pedestrian pathway leading North (left turn) from the Kiss and Ride lot.
- Follow the pathway to some stairs on the left.
- NB there is a unmarked pedestrian walkway heading east through some wooded areas. That goes to Manchester Lake
- Do not take it.
- Cross over and you will see some stairs
- Walk up and turn left and walk along the Franconia Parkway on a paved pedestrian walk way.
- Continue until reaching the Walker Lane area.
- Follow sidewalks along Walker Lane to the Inova Healthcare entrance.
The walk is approximately 0.6 miles and typically takes 10-15 minutes.
Our initial assumption was that the wooded pathway near the station would lead toward Inova Healthcare. It doesn’t. Instead, that unmarked path heads toward Manchester Lakes. To reach the hospital, pedestrians need to find a less obvious route involving a set of stairs and a left turn onto a different pathway. There was no signage directing us. In the end, a kind stranger pointed us in the right direction, and we later used several AI tools to confirm the route. Without that help, we likely would have continued down the wrong path.
There are also two little-known pedestrian pathways connected to the Franconia-Springfield Metro station that are not marked on station signage and do not appear on maps. Located on the west side of the station area, both paths provide access to Frontier Drive. One leads toward a large nearby apartment complex, while the other offers a convenient route toward Springfield Town Center, one of the region’s largest shopping malls. Despite serving as useful pedestrian connections, neither pathway is marked, making them easy for visitors and even regular riders to overlook.
Both are about a ten-minute walk from the Station.
A Small Fix with Big Benefits
This is not a request for a multimillion-dollar infrastructure project. Metro could dramatically improve the passenger experience with:
- A directional sign at the pathway entrance.
- A reassurance sign midway along the route.
- A destination sign near the exit.
- Updated station maps showing nearby walking routes.
- Online wayfinding information highlighting pedestrian connections.
Hospitals, schools, shopping centers, and neighborhoods that sit within walking distance of Metro stations are valuable transit destinations. Yet if riders do not know how to reach them on foot, those connections effectively do not exist.
Wayfinding is infrastructure. Sometimes the most valuable transportation investments are not rails, roads, or buses. Sometimes they are signs.
And if artificial intelligence can find a pathway, surely Metro can mark it.

One frustrating aspect of using Metro Rail and Metrobus is the lack of maps and signage showing pedestrian routes to nearby destinations.
For example, Inova Healthcare on Walker Lane is only about 0.6 miles from the Franconia-Springfield Metro Station, a 10-15 minute walk. An unmarked pedestrian pathway begins near the Kiss & Ride area and provides a direct route. Another pathway leads toward Manchester Lakes and is similarly unmarked.
We found the route confusing and could not find information about it on station maps or online. A few simple signs at the beginning, midpoint, and end of the path could encourage more riders to use Metro for hospital visits and potentially reduce local traffic congestion.
Ironically, we ended up using AI to figure out where the “secret pathway” went.

To the Editor:
Metro riders are often encouraged to walk the “last mile” between stations and destinations, but Metro’s wayfinding frequently falls short.
Recently, I traveled to Inova Healthcare on Walker Lane from Franconia-Springfield Metro Station. The hospital is only about 0.6 miles away, a walk of roughly 10-15 minutes. Yet the pedestrian pathway connecting the station to the area is poorly marked, and little information appears on station maps or online.
What should have been a simple walk became confusing. Ironically, artificial intelligence was more helpful than the transit agency in identifying the route.
Metro does not need a major capital project to solve this problem. A few signs identifying nearby destinations and pedestrian pathways would improve accessibility, encourage transit use, and potentially reduce local traffic congestion.
The Washington region has invested billions in transit infrastructure. Making sure riders know how to reach nearby destinations on foot is one of the least expensive and most effective improvements Metro could make.
